Students gave field reports on plants on Swale that they researched.
Students gather and share their ideas for their own Swale and talk with Mary in a Q&A session about Swale and her work as daylight fades.
The last thing we did on Swale was to make a big salad using plants harvested from Swale. We harvested swiss chard, kale, arugula, lovage, tomatoes, spring onions, june berries and sweet peppers as well as herbs such as pasley, sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano and mint for the salad and dressings.
Salad by cellphone light.
HOMEWORK
- Read Chapter 10 of Lindsay Kelley's BioArt Kitchen. Write a Discussion Statement on the reading and post to your blog. In addition to the regular format of the discussion statement add in any connections you draw between the content of the reading and Mary's work.
- Upload the photos of your plants from Swale (Swale Plant Report Part 2) to your blog.
- If you have not already completed all requirements of the Midterm Proposal or Swale Plant Report Part 1 (i.e. last week's homework) please make sure that is added to your blog by next week.
NEXT WEEK
We will be doing the Chelsea Market Challenge. Food purchased from the market should be the main/featured component of the piece (you have a $20 budget) but you can brainstorm ahead of time and bring in any supplemental tools, canvases etc. that you think you might want to use.
